SHREDDING EVENT SCHEDULED - SATURDAY, MAY 19th AT EASTON’S BEACH

In conjunction with National Public Works week (May 20-26, 2018), the City of Newport Public Services Department is sponsoring a paper shredding event and kicking off a week-long food drive to benefit the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center Food Pantry. Please bring a non-perishable food item to the “Fill-A-Public Works Truck” Food Drive and any sensitive paper documents to be shredded. No commercial businesses, magazines or newspapers accepted. As this event is limited to paper for shredding, Newport residents are reminded that other eligible items for disposal may be taken to the Waste Management Transfer Station as per Clean City’s Transfer Station usage arrangements (see below for additional information). The Transfer Station is located at 65 Halsey Street, (401) 847-0230.
FILL-A-PUBLIC WORKS TRUCK FOOD DRIVE

The City of Newport is joining hundreds of Public Works Departments from across New England to collect non-perishable food items to support our local community food bank needs. Our Fill-A-Public Works Truck Food Drive will occur during National Public Works Week from May 20-26, 2018 and will support the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center Food Pantry. Help us help our neighbors and our friends. Our collection will take place beginning at the Shredding Event scheduled at Easton’s Beach on May 19th (see above for more information) and donations may be dropped off during regular hours at locations throughout the City, including Newport City Hall, Newport Police Headquarters, Edward King House, Newport Public Library, The Hut, the Cottage and the Clean City Office at 80 Halsey Street. YARD WASTE COLLECTIONS
Yard waste collections will occur every other week from May through November. Collections will occur on the weeks of April 30th, May 14th and May 29th (one day delay due to Memorial Day Holiday). Collections occur on your normal scheduled collection day (please see collection map link above). Waste Management will collect leaves, grass clippings and branches less than four inches in diameter (and no more than three feet in length) placed either in paper bags, tied in bundles or in 32 gallon garbage cans (no Yard Waste Only sticker needed). Any yard waste material left in plastic bags will be left behind on the curbside. Please see above link for the 2018 Holiday and Yard Waste Calendar.
MEMORIAL DAY, MONDAY, MAY 28th
TRANSFER STATION CLOSED - COLLECTION DELAYS
The Newport Clean City Program would like to inform residents that the Waste Management Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, May 28, 2018 for the Memorial Day Holiday. Monday through Friday collection services will be delayed one day. Clean City office will be closed for the day and staff will respond to any inquiries as soon as possible upon our return.
ECO-DEPOT –HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL
The next locally scheduled Eco-Depot for household hazardous waste disposal is in Portsmouth on June 23rd from 8 am- 1 pm at Portsmouth High School, 120 Education Way. Please call Rhode Island Resource Recovery at 401.942.1430 x241 to make an appointment.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery (RIRRC) offers free recycling for computers (including monitors, computer towers, laptops and tablets) and TVs to RI households and K-12 schools (public and private). Not accepted items include peripherals (keyboard, mouse, and printer) or other electric or electronic items. There is a state program collection container in every county. You can use any location for computers and TVs coming from your home or a K-12 school.

SHREDDED PAPER REMOVED FROM MIXED RECYCLING
As Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) removed shredded paper from Rhode Island's mixed recycling program, shredded paper is NO longer accepted curbside in mixed recycling containers. RIRRC accepts shredded paper, secured in a bag at their small vehicle area drop off container located at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston. Look for local shredding drop off events, compost shreds in backyard compost bins or dispose of them in the regular trash. BAN ON SINGLE-USE PLASTIC CARRYOUT BAGS - EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1, 2017
November 1, 2017 - The City Plastic Bag ordinance, which passed March 8th of this year, takes effect today. The ordinance will eliminate the distribution of single-use plastic carryout bags. The City is committed to working together with residents, businesses, environmental groups, and volunteers to provide leadership in environmental health and sustainability for our city and island. This ordinance recognized that single-use plastic carryout bags have greatly impacted our community by creating litter on our roadways, polluting the harbor, endangering wildlife, and adding unnecessary cost to waste management. The ordinance is part of Newport Re-Uses, an initiative that will help coordinate, communicate, and create action around stewardship of the environment. Clean City Quick Tips
- If you notice a bulky item(s) WITHOUT a BLUE bulk waste sticker in front of a property, feel free to share helpful information with your neighbor about the Bulk Waste sticker program. If item(s) have been left out for over 48 hours, residents are in violation of non-compliance and The Zoning Office can be notified at (401)845-5451. If you witness items being illegally dumped, please notify The Newport Police at (401)847-1306 immediately to report this illegal behavior. Please provide as much information as possible so a detailed report can be documented and investigations can ensue to deter future illegal dumping. Clean City only takes care of items illegally dumped on city property. Private property owners have to remove the item(s) from their property.
The Waste Management Transfer station is located on 65 Halsey Street. It is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 3:15 p.m. and they are closed from 11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for a lunch break. They are open Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Homeowners must bring a current paper copy property tax bill or water bill along with a government issued ID to use their two free dumps up to 500 lb each load during each fiscal year (July 1st- June 30th of the next year). The homeowner MUST be present at the time of the dump NO EXCEPTIONS. Renters in Newport with a current lease or electric bill and government issued ID may use the transfer station at the rates set forth by Waste Management. Customers at the Waste Management Transfer Station are provided hard hats and safety vests that must be worn at the time of the dump. Government issues IDs and proper paperwork must be presented before each transaction. All items are accepted except for hazardous waste, bricks or concrete. - If you want to report a missed collection (recycling, trash, yard waste, bulky items), please wait to report it until 4 p.m. on your collection day. You may then call Waste Management’s Missed Collections Line at (401)847-0230 to properly report it. Please make sure your carts are properly placed with no violations.
Clean City has a self-service recycling drop off stations located at 80 Halsey Street for cardboard, books, clothing, textiles, and scrap metal. At this time, we CANNOT accept any electronic waste for recycling.
