How do I obtain a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage record
Pursuant to Rhode Island General Law, you must be an immediate blood relative in order to obtain a copy of a vital record (i.e., parents, siblings, grandparents etc.), or if you have a direct tangible interest for the record (i.e., attorney’s, government agents on behalf of a client, etc.).
Please contact the City Clerk’s Office if you have questions regarding obtaining a record. All records may be obtained from the city or town where the birth, death or marriage occurred, or where the party/parties resided at the time. *Please note, death records are public after 50 years and birth and marriage records become public after 100 years. A valid government picture ID, (such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport, etc.) is required at the time of the request.
Please contact the clerk’s office if you do not have one of the above forms of identification for additional information on how you may obtain the record.
The fee for one certified copy is $20 and $15 for each additional record requested at the same time.
MAIL REQUESTS: Please send a written request providing the information regarding the record, a photocopy of a valid ID, a daytime phone number, a self-addressed stamped return envelope, (if needed as described above), and a check or money order payable to : City of Newport.
